Architecture as Inspiration
|
A new group show at Mahua Art Gallery is exploring cityscapes from Varanasi to Bangalore through a collection of paintings, photographs and sculptures by Amit Bhar, Arindam Chakraborty, Kamal Pandya, Krishnendu Porel, Pallon Daruwala, Pradip Maitra, Sohini Dhar, Somenath Maity and Tapas Ghoshal. Both Bhar and Ghosal (in pic: a detail of his work titled “Benaras”) base their paintings on the landscapes of Varanasi, in the temples, palaces and ghats of the religious centre on the banks of the River Ganga. Pandya and Dhar are based on architectural renditions in the styles of Indian miniature paintings, with arches, domes and pine trees featuring prominently alongside trails of road, fences and barricades, playing up the contrasts between the old and the new. Maity and Chakraborty stay close to Kolkata in their work, although while Maity focuses on the buildings, alleys and causeways of the city, Chakraborty picks up on rundown and abandoned buildings. Porel’s study, on the other hand, is in the context of monuments and structures razed in the face of war or turmoil, while Daruwala’s fine art prints capture various architectural façades in Kutch, and Maitra looks at tourist destinations of Rajasthan in his water colour paintings. |
